What is a blanket license?

A blanket license is something issued by performing rights societies like ASCAP and BMI. These societies control the rights for many sound recordings and issue so-called blanket licenses to someone (such as a radio station) allowing that person to perform all of the sound recordings for one lump-sum payment.
